Security around JIRA exposure to the Internet

Hi community,

We were looking into using the HipChat for Jira plugin but ran into an issue because our Jira on-prem setup does not currently have internet connectivity and is walled off. We were thinking we could use NAT to solve this problem BUT that isn't very secure.  Does anyone have any advice how how to open up communication between JIRA and HipChat?  Looking for advice to pass along to our security team.
