Server database restore into later jira version

Mike Rolls January 6, 2022

We are migrating a server instance (v8.3.3) to a different data center instance v8.20.1).

Ideally I would have created a new instance at v8.3.3, restored the database backup from the original server into the new DC server instance & copied the attachment files across.
However, before I started on the project the new instance was created at v8.20.1 & it is seen as too much effort to delete & re-create at v8.3.3.

I don't have permissions to create a temp instance at v8.3.3, import & upgrade & then re-export.
So is it possible to simply restore the v8.3.3 database backup into the database associated with the new v8.20.1 instance & copy the attachments across?

Thanks
Mike

Hi @Mike Rolls

No, It's not possible. The schema changes cannot gurantte the data will be restored as it is and you will surely get an error. You can follow this

Upgrade the existing instance to Data Center Version 8.3.3 in Test Env by following DB backup and home directory backup - restore method

Upgrade the instance to 8.20.1

Database version has to be compatible after you upgrade the instance, otherwise, you need to again restore it to the new database with a compatible version.

Hi Pramodh,
Thanks for confirming - I had a feeling that would be the answer due to schema incompatibilities.
