If you are talking about os, Jira is java based application so if requirement of Jira version is satisfied it run on every platform.

So if you have Java 8 Jira will run fine.

If you are talking about database, yes Jira work with MS SQL server 2016.

Two things,

  1. Java version - make sure you have correct java version.
  2. Port Config in Firewall - make sure port that are about to use for Jira are open and accessible (sometime we forget to do this and struggle to find why Jira is not reachable)

Rest is straight forward.

@Fahad Siddiqui

It purely depend upon version of Jira you are using currently.

I would suggest you keep versions of Jira, DB, and Java same as your old instance, and don't upgrade any dependency during migration. (Atlassian recommend the same)

Once your migration is done successfully, ensure what things you can upgrade. For example,

  • If you are using old version of Java and new version is supported by your Jira version update Java.
  • If you are comfortable with DB upgrade, upgrade it (don't change database type, like from MSSQL to PostgreSQL, it can cause unforeseen issues, in case this is required, establish stating environment)
  • If you don't any dependency on Jira version (like plugins etc) upgrade Jira version.

If you looking what DB, Java version you should use, I personally keep Jira on latest version, with Java 8 and Postgres 9.6.

Thank you again. So you mean if  i am  migrating from WIN 2012 to Win 2016 i should use the exiting version till migration is been completed. And after that depending do the required upgrades. I am only worried that the existing instance should work on WIN 2016. But as you earlier mentioned is compatible that means it should work.

What version of Jira, Java and DB are you currently using?

If your DB version is compatible with Win 2016 you will not face any issue while migrating.

Oh! everything you are using is almost new, you can easily migrate and then upgrade to latest Jira.

DB and Java version will not be needed.

Thank you very much for all your time and efforts really appreciated , i wish you could teach me. Currently we are on WIN 2012 and move to cloud  WIN 2016.

This is fairly straight forward,

  • Backup everything
  • Copy your Jira Installation, Jira home to new server.
  • Install Java and Database on new server
  • Dump database on old server and upload this dump to new server
  • If your home path have change from old server to new server, update home path in `<JIRA_INSTALLATION>/atlassian-jira/WEB-INF/classes/jira-application.properties` file
  • If your DB credential/name have changed update it in `<JIRA_HOME>/dbconfig.xml` file
  • Stop Jira on old server and start on new server.
  • If you are using reverse proxy etc, point it to new Jira server.

This is tough information to gather. This can be  obtained from DB and API, but I am not sure though I suggest you create a separate question for this.

  • If user belong Active Directory check his settings,
  • verify if issue occur when user try to access using different machine and browser.
  • Try resetting user's password etc.

I hope this helps you.
