Set next Issue number

Ashok G August 7, 2020

Whenever i create a new Issue or Bug, a new UNIQUE number is to be auto set for the Bug or Issue. Is there any option for this in Jira?

Hi @Ashok G

Is this beyond the Issue Key?

When an issue is created in a project, it receives a unique identifier based on the Project Key and sequential numbering.

So for example, if your project's key is "ABC", issues will be created as ABC-1, ABC-2, ABC-3, etc based on order of creation.

Thank You Stephen! Where can i find this "Project Key" field to provide the Key value and i want this field to be visible to all the users in the team. Is this possible?

How to set a "Project Key" for any Project?

Hi @Ashok G

The Project Key is set during creation of a project.

For example, if you're creating a Classic Project:

  1. Go to Projects on the navigation bar, and select "Create Project"
  2. Enter a Project Name - such as "Test Project"
  3. The Project Key will auto-fill, usually with the initials of the project name - but you can modify this to be any 10 characters, as long as it starts with a letter

Issue Keys are always visible - they're a default for all issue and card views and not editable once set.

If this isn't suitable for your use-case you could add a custom field and populate it using automation rules (I can tell you how), but I would check if Issue Key meets your needs first.
