Hello Atlassian Community,
I'm seeking advice on how to effectively track and display the progress of Issues based on the status of their associated User Stories in Jira. Ideally, we would prefer a method that involves tracking percentages, but we're also open to using labels if it proves more efficient.
Here's the issue we're facing: We've considered using custom fields where we manually input the percentage of completion for each User Story. However, this approach doesn't seem to provide an automatic calculation that would then display an overall progress percentage for the corresponding Epic.
Additionally, it would be particularly helpful if there was a way to enter completion percentages manually for tickets like User Stories and to have this information easily viewable on the roadmap.
We've also thought about creating sub-tasks for each User Story, which would give us an unweighted average completion percentage. However, this process seems quite labor-intensive.
Another approach we've contemplated is using labels at the Epic level (e.g., "No Progress", "Unlikely", "Likely", "Confident") for a qualitative evaluation. However, we're unsure how to translate these labels to the feature layer and how they would be reflected in the roadmap view.
Our primary goal is to have the progress easily visible on the roadmap board. Do any of you have suggestions or solutions on how we could achieve this? Any advice on modifying our workflow or considering alternative methods would also be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Hi @Martin,
My advice would be to create a Jira dashboard with all the necessary gadgets on it. The advantage of dashboards is that they are highly customizable, allows you to centralize all the metrics in one-single page, and they can be share with teams and other project stakeholders.
From what I see, your intention is to track progress at the Epic level. A very good solution for this would be the Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget offered by our Great Gadgets app. By using this gadget you can track the projects of you epics in various ways: by sum of story points, as percentage of story points completed or as percentage of number of stories/tasks completed.
Here is an example:
In this example, calculation is done by the status category of the stories in these epics.
And, if you prefer a multi-pie chart representation...
You could also track epics by displaying epic burndown charts. This can be done by using the Release Burndown Burnup Chart gadget offered by the same app.
This app gives you advanced analytics that will fully address your needs. See more details and examples in these articles:

Hope this helps.
