Single selection as estimation field

Hi,

I added a field for estimation using story points. It is a single selection which contains all possible sizes so I can use it in several jira dashboard gadgets. Now I'm trying to use the field as estimation field in Jira agile but the board configuration selection does not show the field to select. Is it not possible to use fields others than numeric as estimation fields in jira agile or do I have to configure additional information somewhere else?

That is referring to fields used for statistical reports, not story points. However, it is broadly the same principal. Story points must be a number.
