Hi Jira Community,
we have setup a new instance of Jira Software for testing but seem to have issues with getting the newly acquired Starter License with it. Steps:
* Setup a complete new server to not interfere with our production environment
* Install Jira Software 8.5.1 (same as we have in production env)
* Export data from production env as XML and import that to testing env server
Now then testing instance uses the same license as the production instance which I would like to change because we have bought a new Starter License for this testing env instance which I see in my.atlassian.com but there is no license key there. When I click "View License" I am asked to enter a new Server ID. I followed the instructions here to manually set a new Server ID for our testing instance: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/change-the-server-id-for-an-instance-of-jira-server-285839562.html
But always get the error message "Invalid Server ID - Please try copying and pasting the Server ID directly from the product."
My guess is that simply creating my own Server ID as mentioned in the above link is not enough. How do I properly generate a new Server ID and register that with Atlassian??
Thanks in advance!
Fabian
Hi @Fabian Pohlmann ,
you don't need a separate Starter Licence for your testing instance : you have a free developer instance with your current production licence, you can find it on your my.atlassian.com, click on your Jira licence and you will see a "View developer License" button below the key.
Let me know if this helps,

Hi Alexis,
thanks heaps for your quick reply!
My request was missing an important information, sorry for that. We are a very small company and our production instance is running on a Starter License as well because we don't have more than 10 users! Unfortunately Starter License does not include a free extra license for testing/development so we went ahead and bought second Starter License as suggested by Atlassian support (licensing team).
When I told them about the "Invalid Server ID" issue I run into they told me they can't help me and I should send my question to the community. So here I am :-)

You can actually use the same Server ID as your production server, it's only used to generate the key - it doesn't mean that the licence is tied to a specific server.

Hi Alexis,
now I feel really stupid. I'd have never expected for it to be ok that Server IDs be identical on two instances!
Should have tried that but...
Thanks very much!! All is set now.

You're welcome ! for your information, it's better to mark the question as "Accepted" with the above button rather than editing the title, this way other users can find it easily later on :)
