Sprints not closed/completed

I have just taken up a project as Scrum Master and I am seeing that all the previous sprints have been kept open and not marked as Closed/Completed.

I am not sure what the reason is but this seems wrong to me. The velocity chart is not getting reflected since sprints are not marked as closed or completed.

Can anyone please help me in understanding what all will be the impacts or any other places where I will see impact because of this in case the Sprint is kept open. Are any of the charts/reports impacted due to this?

Most of the Agile reports - Burndown chart, Sprint chart, Velocity chart etc - would be impacted if a Sprint is left open. And it is definitely not a good practice.

You should probably find out why they did it and figure out the right way to address the issue they were originally facing. Whatever it is, I would close all past sprints and start over!
