Hi guys,

so I am planning to take an XML backup of my Jira instance in order to use it for migration means. However during that, I need to stop access to Jira for any other user than an administrator who will create the backup. There is this following documentation I need help with.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver073/preventing-users-from-accessing-jira-applications-during-backups-861253827.html

I would like to use the recommended method. However I do not understand the single steps to do that. How do you "stop Apache from proxying to Jira applications"? Does this mean I would only be able to connect via localhost:port?

Another questions would be if this procedure is also applicable to Confluence.

I hope you guys can help me here.

My best

Merve

I have a better idea. :) Don't use XML as your method of backup. Atlassian does not recommend using this as your backup method. It's one of the most expensive operations that Jira does, and it can cause you to run out of memory and crash.

Instead, you should use native database backup tools, and then back up the application home directory. If you use a native database backup tool, the tables will be locked while the backup occurs, which stops users writing to Jira during that time. It's also a lot faster than doing an XML backup. The same is true for Confluence.

Hey Dave,

thanks for sharing your opinion. I certainly see the issues of XML backups and will keep them in mind.
