Task driving milestones

We are having problems with turning something into a milestone when it has underpinning tasks/stories under it within the task hierarchy. Please could you explain why this is not possible within the system or if there is a work around?

Indeed, parent tasks cannot be converted into Milestone, which results from the difference in duration of both elements.

By definition, milestones are represented on the Gantt chart as diamonds that do not have any duration, while parent task is a sum of the duration of its children. 

A good practice and recommended workaround is using an additional Jira issue (milestone) or a Basic Task to mark a specific point along a project timeline and link it with a given parent task. 

If you want to avoid litter their Jira backlog with milestones, then we recommend using Basic Task.
