This sprint contains 0 completed work items and 58 open work items although all are DONE!

Ardalan Sepehri July 28, 2025

Hi all,

I use a team managed project and I have following following workflow:

1. TO DO: New, Prioritized

2. In Progress: BA, SA, Archi Dev, PBI Dev, Demo

3. Done

now, I have subtasks under each Story issue type that is created and moved by each dev. I have problem when closing my Sprint because although each Story is closed only when the sub-tasks are closed by the devs and that happens before end of Sprint (meaning that no sub-task is open when the relevant Story is closed) but I have the problem of seeing:

"This sprint contains 0 completed work items and 58 open work items"

and every time I get questioned around why Jira is showing this message:
Capture d’écran 2025-07-28 092213.png

I dont know why this happens everytime although I know the items that are not Done (like the stories that have subtasks yet open will be moving to the next Sprint) will move to the next Sprint. I also counted the no. of those issues in DONE status on the current Sprint and see they match the no. of all those closed Stories. Also I have checked the workflow columns on the project setting and I mad sure the DONE column is the last one and the issues which are DONE are put under that column once they are completed

Your help would be much appreciated.

Hello @Ardalan Sepehri ,

Thank you for your question.

The most likely culprit here is that the statuses that your subtasks end up in (after they are closed by the team) are not mapped to the "Done" column of your board. While your Stories are closed when subtasks are closed, Jira's sprint completion logic is checking each subtask's actual status against the board's definition of "Done" when attempting to close the sprint. Also, cross check the resolution field value for both the Stories and Sub-tasks. If Story or Sub-task is done then Resolution should be updated with correct value.

Refer to the Sprint cannot be completed as there are incomplete subtasks in Jira Cloud

Hi @pawarsachin84 ,

thanks for the quick reply, however, I am not sure your response could be applied on my case or not because as I explained in my question, all the subtasks are well closed (in the rightmost column before we close the Sprint), here is the screenshot for our columns & statuses setting of the board. As you see here all the Done statuses are applied to all issue type (including sub-task) for moving them to DONE:

so, although we have all those sub-tasks are well mapped to DONE but still I have this issue upon closing my Sprint

@Ardalan Sepehri

Does your workflow create a resolution status when issues are moved to done?

Resolution status is the true "done" and will mark the issues as truly complete. You can check if it's set in the workflow, it's done via post function.

Thanks

Aaron

Thanks @Aaron Williams  for your quick reply, unfortunately I can not see this condition as I am using the team managed board, if you know where to find it on the team managed board, it would of high value to share it please?
