Timeline feature for an Epic to update based on dependencies

Hunter Hawes March 4, 2022

A new project manager has been exploring using Jira as a useful tool for him to keep up with tasks and dependencies. I have only ever used the software scrum boards but he was asking me questions about the project management board and the timeline feature which I have no idea the capabilities.

Essentially he has an Epic to use as a higher all encompassing goal/task that needs to be started on Date 1 and be completed on Date 2, and tasks under it are needed for completing that goal/task. Similar to a Task / Sub-Task relationship.

Problem #1:

He has created task issues under the epic but when viewing the timeline feature, it doesn't necessarily show the tasks under the epic with a drop down but rather just every ticket created seemingly on the same level. Ideally he wants to see these tasks similar to how a task views a sub-task underneath it.

Problem #2:

When using the timeline feature, the dates for the epic are set and it clearly shows the timeline from start to finish for the epic. The tasks that are under/linked to the epic have their dates are set as well. His issue is, when one of the tasks that are under the epic have their timeline extend past the original date and exceed the due date for the epic, is there a way to make the epic update due to the dependency. The epic will no longer be able to be completed by Date 2, due to the fact that one of the tasks needed for completion had their date push further back then expected.

In short, is there a way for the epic to have it's due date update based on the dependency on the tasks needed for completion

I will say, I understand if in Jira terms this may not be it's intended use/relationship for epics and tasks so I'm willing to go about it any other way if any suggestions are made.

Hi @Hunter Hawes

Out of the box the auto scheduling of issues based on dependencies is not supported.

Your best option is to use a third party plug in such as biggantt, wbs Gantt char or structure Gantt.  Lots of more options in the marketplace.

Or you can use jira automation to update the due dates comparing the current epic date vs any of the issues under the epic.
