Translation of customfield labels

We need to provide a JIRA customization, both in English and Swedish.
This involves translating the labels on customfields.

The last issue found in JAC is
https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-6481

(7 years old) where there is a hint that translation of customfields would
be delivered in a future release.

How do others tacle this problem - could it be done with some javascript ?
