Unable to import project from existing jira 8.14.1 to new jira 9.3.0

sivakiran reddy January 9, 2023

Hi All,

We have 2 environments we plan to decommission the existing one 8.14.1 and import the project in new Jira server 9.3.0. But when we try to import the project we are facing the issue  while giving file name under project import.

The file is not a valid JIra backup

Hi @sivakiran reddy

A few questions...

  • How are you exporting/importing the Project(s)? Is it using the native Project Import tool, or an App?
  • Not something I've seen before, but could it be a permissions issue? Check out this previous question on this topic - eg. the Jira Admin has full read/write access to the file

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the update.. Administration -- > Project --> export project

Placing zip file under Atlassian--ApplicationData---JIra---Import

Administration -->system-->import project

trying to give the zip file name but getting the above exception

Hi @sivakiran reddy

If it's a single Project export, there's not a native feature that does this. See this help page which clarifies this.

Is there an App's name mentioned at the location you do the export from?

Common Apps for this are...

^ If you are using an App, you should use whichever App you are exporting the Project with from the source instance, to import it into the destination instance.

That's a function being provided by an app.  Jira does not have "project export"natively.

The export and import in Jira is done by a full Jira backup to XML and then pointing the project import to the backup xml.

Whatever app is providing your export project link should be used to do the import.  Off the top of my head, it could be Project Configurator or Configuration Manager (I seem to remember they name themselves in the options menus)
