Unable to search on custom field with several options in the drop down menu

Created a custom field with 100+ options in a drop down menu. Made this field required when users are creating stories; however, this field isn't searchable when creating the user story - only when editing an existing story. For example if I started typing one of the options in the drop down menu, I would expect that to popup as an option rather than having to scroll all the way down with the little bar menu.

I also checked and the multi-select searcher is selected.
