Under JIRA >> Search For Issues screen, the output of JQL varies between User A and User B

Santanu Roy January 25, 2022

Under Issues >> Search For Issues screen, I am using a simple JQL to retrieve a list of issues against a Sprint ID.

However, when I am executing the JQL using my User ID, I see one Sprint Name for that ID.

And, when I switch user (to a different ID) and execute the same JQL using that User ID, I see its referencing a different Sprint Name, despite the fact the Sprint ID was the same as earlier.

And, as a result, the JQL output for User-A is not matching with that of User-B.

Even though Sprint ID's are the same.

I am attaching two snapshots for your reference (each snapshot corresponds to each user).

Could you please analyze this issue and let us know if this could be resolvedUser-A_JQL.JPGUser-B_JQL.JPG

One of the people can see a sprint that the other can not, and the 1153 is matching it before the other.

Thanks for the response, Nic.

User A sees Sprint# 1153 as "Sprint 1"

User B sees Sprint# 1153 as "Sprint 2"

Sprint ID is the same for both, which is 1153.

However, the sprint name differs.

Which is weird.

I think you did refer both my screenshot.

So what would be the resolution.

How can we ensure that, User B also is able to view "Sprint 1" against '1153' and not Sprint 2.

Ah, I see, you've misunderstood what the "sprint" field is.

The 1153 you are quoting is not the sprint id.  It's a search term for the JQL, which is matching it to different sprints for different users.

The sprint ID is unique and identifies a single sprint, with a single name.

Sprint ID 1153 is almost certainly a totally different sprint to either of the two you are seeing, if it even exists!

You can see this if you retype your JQL slowly and watch it offer suggestions.

When I type sprint = 1   2   3  4 (spaces in there to indicate I'm pausing) into a large Jira, it offers me no suggestions on the 1, but when I pause after the 2, I get offered stuff like:

  • Sprint 12 2018-03-04
  • Mama 12 2019-05-06
  • Dave 2020-12-06

The bold is highlighting the reason my search is finding the number I've typed in - your screenshots are of the truncated field (Jira's fault, not yours), but I bet when you select the sprints, their display name contains 11 and possibly a 53 somewhere as well

Thanks for the response. I got your point. I even used the sprint ID in quotes, but again the same issue.

Because, I still want to know, how can the sprint ID differ for different users?

It should be an unique ID.

I remember you saying the sprint might not be visible to the user and therefore its displaying a wrong one.

How can we ensure that that sprint in particular is visible to the user.

Can we provide sprint level access to users? Or are you saying that the User does not have access to the Board/Project where the sprint lies.

Kindly provide a resolution.

Awaiting your response.

I am sorry, but you did not get the point.  I am not sure how else to explain that The 1153 you are quoting is not the sprint id.

Could you have another read of what I wrote?
