Lena,

In theory, you can move directly from version 7.0.0 to the latest version. The challenges that arise from making such a large move normally relate the auxiliary upgrades you need to perform.

Quite a few apps (Previously called plugins or add ons) will not have versions that are compatible for both Jira versions 7.0.0 and 8.3.3. You need to make sure you handle those correctly, normally by disabling prior to beginning the upgrade. You should run the add on update check to understand which ones require action.

In addition, there can be systems such as the database or java version that may need to be updated as well. Depending on your database, it's possible that there isn't a fully supported path moving directly from 7.0.0 into 8.3.3. For example, it you were running Postgres 9.2, that is no longer supported as of 7.4.x. You would want to upgrade your database prior to beginning the upgrade. You'll need to research what the platform requirements are for 8.3.3 as it relates to the database you use.

Finally, you'll want to make sure you understand any changes that are being introduced to the installation files. You'll need to read through the upgrade notes of each version between 7.0.0 and 8.3.3 to fully understand the impacts of the upgrade.

Hopefully this helps, but please ask any questions if anything was unclear!
