Upgrade from 4.2.3 to 5.1.7 failed due to Workflow trailing white space

I was trying to upgrade our JIRA Production server from 4.2.3 to 5.1.7 (on a different server). Everything seemed fine until I tried to restore the 4.2.3 database. It crashed and gave me an 'Exception' error "Exception trhrown during upgrade: Failed to upgrade workflow: ...

Iooked up the error and found out that I can't have trailing white space after a workflow name. Here's the link explaining it (https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-30157?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:changehistory-tabpanel).

The fix was a little confusing plus I don't have access to our Oracle Database (I'd have to get our database manager to handle it) so I was wondering if instead I could just edit the XML backup (from 4.2.3) and delete the blank space(s) after all of the Workflow names before restoring it to 5.1.7. It looks like the 'name' is referenced in several places so I would change all references to that name.

Yes, one of the workarounds for this is to edit the XML backup itself and remove the whitespace at the beginning or the end of the workflow names.

Make sure to create a copy of the backup before making changes to it, just in case.

Hope this helps,

Thanks. That worked like a charm. I haven't tested it yet, but it did succeed the restore.
