Upgrade from 7.11.0 to 8.4.1

Any recommendations on path from 7.11.0 to 8.4.1--in that, any reason not to go directly to 8.4.1, or should I use some step up path?  I checked the add-ons, and they seem compatible.

Also, if you did this route, did you bother with the disabling of the indexing during the upgrade?

Hi David,

Overall I am not aware of any conflicts or bugs directly in this upgrade path, other than the best practices during a upgrade like checking for compatibility, and as you noted you already did a add-on compatibility check and it looked good, so just the general upgrade prep steps would be recommended, and I would suggest checking out the following guide we have to help streamline the process, covering pre-upgrade recommendations and an upgrade checklist:

However I did just spot a BUG in the formatting of this "Upgrade checklist" documents CSS script load out for the table causing some of the text to get cut off and we are currently working on correcting the layout, but if you still see the scripting error on the page before we fix it a quick workaround  to correct this is covered in the following BUG report I put together where this occurred on a different page and we missed the upgrade checklist page in the follow up sweep >> https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSDSERVER-5298 <<

As covered in the guide reviewing the release and upgrade notes is highly recommended for all versions between the starting and destination versions, to spot any speciffic requirements for your environment that could impact the upgrade  and doing a quick review, One thing I spotted that may cause an issue in compatibility is if your running a Postgresql 9.3 database, noting:

PostgreSQL 9.3 deprecated

Jira 7.12 has deprecated the use of PostgreSQL 9.3. In Jira 8.0, we'll be permanently removing the support for PostgreSQL 9.3. For more info, see End of support announcements.

And a really the absolute best practice to follow is to set up a staging system and run a test upgrade before you run the productions upgrade as Jira Server is so customizable that there is always a chance that something very specific to your environment can cause a failure during upgrade, and details on setting up a staged system can be seen in:

Earl

Hi David,

You can upgrade from Jira 7.11.0 to 8.4.1 without any intermediate upgrades. You should not need to disable indexing during the upgrade. Following the standard upgrade steps listed in documentation should be all you need between those two versions. You're already ahead of the game by checking your add-on compatibility :) As always, we suggest taking a database backup before proceeding with the upgrade. The installer will automatically take a backup of your install directory and ask if you'd like to backup your home directory when it runs.

Cheers,
