Using {{issue.parent.summary}} in automation to name child stories based on Parent TLE

Mike Boutin March 27, 2025

I am trying to add the Parent Summary name to child stories I am creating using automation.

The Syntax I have been told I can use is: "{{issue.parent.summary}} 1. Schematic" in the create story event to apply the summary name of "1. Schematic" with a prefix of the TLE Summary.

When executed I do not get the TLE summary as expected. I only get the free text I am adding.

The audit trail shows success and does not flag any errors.

The Atlassian support group was able to provide a solution.

My goal was to have the Summary of the Parent issue be included in any child issue's summary at creation using automation.

The syntax that worked was: {{triggerIssue.summary}} in the automation step to create the child issue.

Hi @Mike Boutin -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

For a question like this, context is important for the community to help.  Please post the following:

  • what type of project is this (e.g., company-managed, team-managed, etc.),
  • an image of your complete automation rule in a single image for continuity,
  • images of any relevant actions / conditions / branches,
  • an image of the audit log details showing the rule execution, and
  • explain what is not working as expected and why you believe that to be the case.

Kind regards,
Bill

    Cloud based Jira, Company-managed

This system won't allow me to add an image. I get error that I have exceeded the character limit.

The automation creates stories based on a specific TLE (Team Level Epic) I want the Summary of the TLE to be a prefix (or suffix) to the summary of the story that is being created in addition to my summary text.

When I add one I get the message "Details must be less than 100,000 characters, including images and markdown formatting". The picture comes in but I am unable to save/publish.

Without knowing the complete steps in your rule and the details of the edit, it will be difficult for the community to offer suggestions.

I recommend asking the same questions to your Jira Site Admin to learn how they can help.

Hi @Mike Boutin and welcome to the Atlassian Community!

can you share the automation you have done?

This way we can help you if there is a missing part.

Also, what do you mean by "TLE", what does that acronym stand for?

Best,

Murat Seven
