What controls the ordering of Issues in the Timeline view?

Elliot Manuel March 24, 2024

What variable in Jira is controlling the sorting of Issues in the Timeline view. I have a Task level item with an associated Sub-task, and I want the Task and the Sub-task to be grouped in the Timeline view. See the image below.

Hello @Elliot Manuel

For clarity, can you provide more information as follows?

There are multiple Timeline functions in Jira:

  1. The Timeline available natively with a Business/Work Management project. "Timeline" appears in the options arranged horizontally across the top of the screen along with "Summary", "Board", "List", and "Calendar".
  2. The "basic" Timeline available natively with an Agile Board where the board explicitly is scoped to a single project. "Timeline" appears in the navigation panel on the left along with options like "Board", "Issues" and "Reports".
  3. The timeline available in an Advanced Roadmaps Plan. Plans are accessed from the Plans menu at the very top of the screen.

Which of these timeline functions are you using?

Issues are typically ordered by Rank (i.e. relative priority), but it may be possible to change that depending on how you accessed the Timeline feature.

Can you open the issue you have identified as a Subtask and show us the breadcrumbs that display above the Summary for it? Example:

Hi @Elliot Manuel

I believe it's sorted by issue key, therefore created order - aside from issues with parents (in JSW) which show under their parent, but also in issue key order.

You can drag/drop them into a different order, but there's no sorting option at this point.

See this help page for more information...

Reorder items on the timeline

Select the item name and drag it up or down to reorder it. If the item has child items (or subtasks), they’ll remain with their parent item. Your changes will be reflected in the board and list views as well.

Currently, you’re unable to sort in the timeline view.
