What is planned capacity and free capacity?

What is a free capacity and planned capacity for each week?

I have set the skill for each team member with the same level skill for the same task in the same week, how come the member's capacity in a week can be different?

And why the planned capacity and free capacity can be different each week for a long time run task?

Hi @Alicia Y,

have you checked out the Portfolio docs about capacity? The docs explain:

  • Free capacity: Amount of free capacity after usage
  • Planned capacity: Original planned capacity

The docs also explain the capacity view in more detail.

How come the member's capacity in a week can be different?

Have you checked how the team's availability is configured? This might be different for every team member - here's a doc link to get you started.

The planned and free capacity can be different each week also due to the different availability of your team members.

Cheers,
Matthias.

Thanks Matthias, I had done all the setting as you suggested that's why I still feel confused, for a continuous project,(need two or more sprints to finish), same task, same group, same work iteration, same team capacity setting, only difference may be the story point( story point is calculated by tasks, but each task may need two or more weeks to finish), is this the reason why my team's capacity differs?

Another question, is the epic and story in next-gen project different from classical ones? It seems once I import the next-gen project into portfolio plan, the epic and its child issue stories cannot be linked to each other even though I did add the child link/parent link in next-gen agile project
