Can someone clarify the purpose for this field? In my implementation its greyed out and the only entry in the dropdown is No Matches.

Hi @Steven Janvrin ~ yeah. This design always annoyed me. In order to select a Component Lead, you need to start typing someone's name (any active user that has Jira Software application access in your environment) and it will appear for selection. Essentially, designating a Component Lead allows for auto-assignment of issues created with that specific Component. HTH
Exactly. You set a component in a work item and the assignee can be automatically assigned to the component lead. Now if you set 3 components on a work item, it gets more complicated, involving the order of components and their alphabetical names IIRC. This is not clearly documented that I could find
