Hi Team,

I recently faced this scenarion in my team. Want to understand scenario where say there is a story worth 5 SP added in current sprint and at the end of the sprint team realizes that the story still needs little more time to complete. So in such cases what is best approach ? a or b ?

        a. Directly move the story to next sprint and continue with the remaining and close it there

        b. Split the story in current sprint and give estimate new story as per the effort and close already existing one in current sprint and keep splitted story in next sprint .

Which approach is the most recpmmended one and why ? How does it effect velocity and other metrices. In case we go with option a then how do we measure individuals effort and team's velocity for that sprint and if we go with option 2 then how do we say wheather its a apillover or not?

Hi @SHRUTI GOYAL ,

Welcome to the community !!

This questions seems more related to Scrum and not to Jira. Your scrum master would be the right person to answer.

Here is my  point of view.

  1. If you split a story, the team will not get credit for the points since they did not deliver. They will be credited only for the hours worked.
Splitting of stories highlights the fact that the team was not able to deliver what they committed and thus, there is some scope of improvement (planning, solution, requirements accuracy or implementation).
  2. If you move a story, then the team will not get credit for the points NOR will they get credit for the hours.
  3. If you change the points when you move and/or split, the team will not get credit for the points in the first iteration and when you do get credit it will be for less points since the point value was changed.

Personal note, "You should not deliver points. you should deliver value"

Hi @SHRUTI GOYAL ,

The sprint report in the Time in Status app (developed by my team) can be used to analyze the sprint.

There, you will see all the necessary metrics to evaluate the sprint performance and the carryover indicator in case tasks are transferred to the next sprint.
