I created a "need more info" status and it worked fine.

Since then I created a status "In mock ups" and all the cards assigned this status disappear. When i delete this status from the work flow they all reappear. I tried different names and it does the same.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

A board and its backlog (they're two faces of one thing really) are not containers, they are a view of a selection of issues.

They're driven by a filter that selects a load of issues (this is often as simple as "project ="), so the first thing to check is if your filter does not accidentally exclude your new status.

Next, the more likely problem - boards have columns which are groups of status in the workflow.  Each column displays cards for each issue in the status in the column.    When you create a board, it creates a column mapping with all possible status pre-mapped, but if you introduce a new status later, it can't know if you want that status on the board, so it does nothing with it.  The issue won't appear in the backlog because the board doesn't include its status.  Solution - board config -> columns, and add the new status into the right column.
