Which version of Jira should we upgrade to?

Hi

We are running Jira 4.0.1, with approximately 100 users. We also run Confluence 3.2. I guess it is time for an upgrade for Jira. The only compelling reason for us to upgrade is improved LDAP support, so I think we should upgrade to at least version 4.3.

Should we upgrade to Jira 5.0, or would a lower version be safer?

A lower version would be safer if you're using any plugins that depend on portlets, which have been deprecated as mentioned in the JIRA 5.0 release notes. If you're going to upgrade to JIRA 5, we do recommend to upgrade first to JIRA 4.4 before upgrading to JIRA 5. Also, are you upgrading Confluence as well? Applications links change the interaction between JIRA/Confluence, therefore I would recommend to upgrade Confluence and JIRA both to latest. Ofcourse be sure to perform this upgrade first in your test environment :)

Thanks for your answer. We don't use plugins in Jira. We intend to upgrade Confluence to 3.5.13.

Would Jira 4.4 and Confluence 3.5.13 be a good combination?

Would Jira 4.4 and Confluence 3.2 work as an initial step?

For the "between" step JIRA 4.4 and Confluence 3.5.13 works best. How do you have them currently integrated? Trusted applications, usermanagement?

In our environment, Jira and Confluence are currently not integrated.

Simple answer - 5.0 is better than 4.x

There are some minor reasons for staying on a lower Jira, but I can't judge whether they apply to you because I don't know your users, setup or actual usage. Generally, I'd go with testing 5.x with one of your power users and if they don't stumble into any show-stoppers, go for it.
