Why can't I see the tabs on the view issue screen in JIRA

Lavern Dowsley April 2, 2022

Hi,

I created a new issue type and screen and added to a scheme etc..

I can see and populate the tabs when I click create but when I 'view' the issue the tabs are not there.  I have followed the instructions below with no luck.

Cause

  1. Specific custom fields are assigned to various places on the View Issue screen:
    1. Date custom fields will show up in the Dates section.
    2. Any custom fields involved with a user picker will show up in the People section.
  2. If a custom field does not have any data in it it will not be rendered.
  3. If there are no custom fields that meet either of the above conditions, the tab will not show up.
  4. If just one tab has custom fields filled, the tab will not be represented and the fields from this tab will be rendered at the Default Field Tab.

The logic behind the functionality comes down to the distinction between what should be visible when viewing (only relevant information) and editing (all editable fields) an issue. We’re hiding empty custom fields and tabs on the “View issue” screen to improve readability and performance (by rendering a lower number of fields). Displaying all custom fields would make the issue unclear especially when a large number of custom fields are defined.

Resolution

Ensure that the following conditions are met:

  1. All of the tabs have custom fields on them (including the default Field Tab).
  2. At least one of those custom field types must not be a Date or People type (as those will show up in their respective sections in the view issue screen).
  3. At least one of those custom fields must have a value.
  4. At least two tabs (including the Default Field Tab) should have Fields filled (others than System Fields as Summary, Description, Labels, Priority, Issue link).create issue.jpgissue screen.jpg

Hi @Lavern Dowsley

Did you use these instructions? If so, these are for Data Center, not Cloud - so aren't necessarily relevant

I tried this with a few field variations - and the tabs stayed visible regardless of the field type, or if they were empty or populated.

This is what I did...

  • Created a Screen, with fields in tabs
  • Modified the Screen Scheme which is used for the relevant Issue Type, in the Issue Type Screen Scheme
    • In your instance, this would be the Screen Scheme used for "Test"
  • Ensured either...
    • The Default Issue Operation was the only mapped operation or...
    • Create, Edit and View operations were all mapped to Screens with the tabs

^ This worked as expected - tabs appear both on the Create Screen, and post-creation.

Note: I've assumed you're using a Company-managed Project.

Let us know if this works for you!

This is the crusul piece I was missing (

  • Create, Edit and View operations were all mapped to Screens with the tabs)

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate your assistance :)

@Lavern Dowsley ,

Thanks for adding question and Solution for this, this will help other users to fixed their issues.

Thanks.

Hi, my point is this posted solution doesn't work for me.  The 'tabs' only appear on the 'Create' screen, not the 'View Issue' screen.

I'm looking for assistance.

@Lavern Dowsley ,

Please go the project setting "Click on Screen" check the screen like " Create", "view" and "edit screen".

If you already added in create screens, then now you have to add this field in the "view" and "edit" screen.

Please let me know.

Thanks.

That's what I was missing!  Click on Screen" check the screen like " Create", "view" and "edit screen".

Thank you so much :)

@kuldeep Singh can you clarify what "project setting" you are referring to please? I have a Jira Service Project but I cannot see "Click on Screen" in project settings.

Hi @Dai G

Are you having the same issue? That the tabs aren't showing on the view screen?

Having the no-tabs issue only in Edit (tabbed in view).

We have 6 tabs which show in Screens for Create, Edit and View correctly on the Screens setting for the issuetype.

We know that in view, you only see a tab if a custom field has data and we see that, so in a couple examples we see 3 tabs in view because of custom field data on the other 2 tabs.

However, clicking "Edit" on the issue opens a modal window which simply scrolls vertically through all the fields and does not have tabs.

This happened right after we created some request types that use the same issue type.

Hi @Marc Isikoff

Is this Cloud or Server/DC?

Hi Stephen,

This is Server/DC.

I am not sure why we lost the ability to see tabs in the edit screen, but it still has not come back - we do have custom field data in those tabs and like I said, we get tabs in view issues, screen setup of create, edit, view, but not in edit issues.

What's the exact setup in Screen Scheme operations for each relevant screen?

It's fixed - you have to go to edit an issue and show all fields in the upper right box and then it's tabbed correctly, else selecting the fields you want, it returns to vertical scroll.
