Why can't I update the rank using drag and drop?

I work with a completely regular filter on issues in my project. The sorting is "ascending in rank".

Problem:
I cannot change the rank by drag and drop.
The rank does not update. The rank value remains unchanged. See (3)

(4) After browser refresh (F5), the issue holds on same position (rank).

And if I change the rank via the context menu (...) with the command "Rank up" or "Rank down", the issue is not changed by one rank up or down, but all the way up or all the way down.

I have already taken into account the information from other posts like "How to sort epic by rank and the child issues by title?" and "rank and priority sorting".

The sorting is (only) "ascending rank".

What's wrong?

P.S .: I use Jira Server (v8.4.2 # 804003-sha1: d21414f)

Hi Sebastian,

Well this is a confusing behavior in te Jira list view. Drag and dropping is visually possible but it doesn't do anything with the data.

Changnig the rank of issues can only be done in agile boards, not on the regular list view unfortunately.

I found the bug report about this behavior.

It has been fixed in version 8.8.0. That version does not allow the visual drag and drop anymore. I assume your Jira version is older?

Hi @Charlie Misonne ,

Thank you for your quick support and for clarifying the subject! Very good...

I will no longer use 'Drag n Drop' in the list view of the Issue Navigator.

But I still have a short comment and question ...

You wrote:

With which board as an example have you been able to use this successfully?

Background to my question - In the summary of the bug report it says:

It should only work for rearranging subtask in issue view.

This contradicts itself somewhat, or do you only describe the possibility to change the rank (without 'drag n drop') to change it at all (e.g. in an agile board)
and the bug report only refers to the possibility to change the rank with Drag n Drop '?

Hi @Sebastian Spitzer

Reordering sub-tasks should be possible in the list view. But I don't think it has anything to do with the rank field. To be honest I never tried that.

About the agile boards: when you drag and drop issues in the same column of a kanban board (or active sprint) or in the backlog of a scrum board then the rank field should be updated. But this only works if your board filter is order by the rank field.
