Why cant I get smart commits transitions to work

We are not able to use smart commits to transition or time log. The commits do show up on the issue screens but cannot get the transitions to work at all.

We are using next-gen projects and github. I am sure that my email in git config is correctly the same as the one that I log in to Jira with. 

Here is an example commit message:

git commit -m "FLOW-75 #in_progress #comment Im working on getting the transitions to work"

I have read all the other questions and tried all the solutions for this in the forums and am at a loss. Can someone please help?
