Why is it not possible to rename a transition in a Workflow?

Lisa Zanini

I copied an existing Workflow to add a new status. I started using the new workflow for one project to test if everything is as I wanted it to be.

Now i want to change the name of one transition from "Ready for Review" to "ready for Review" but the error message on the screen shot appears.

This question was asked before (https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/Why-I-can-not-rename-a-transition/qaq-p/1253389) but with no satisfying answer.

Hi @Lisa Zanini

Most likely there is another transition that is being called the same pushing to the same status.  Transition names are used for workflow automations so that is the main reason why they cannot be called the same.

The trick is to add an extra space at the end or an "*" to differiantiate if you want to have similar names.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Fabian Lim

Although there is no second transition with the same name, the workaround with adding an extra space worked.

Thanks for your quick help.

Hi Lisa,

I find registred bug Atlassian https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-72647

Workaround:

  1. Change the name in 2 steps:
  2. Add something to the new name: Test Failed > Test failedx
  3. Remove that something: Test failedx > Test failed
