Why is the rank lowered when an issue enters a Kanban Board

Martin d'Anjou February 12, 2025

When an issue is moved from the backlog to the Kanban Board, its rank is lowered. This defeats the purpose of the Structure.Gantt auto-leveling feature as when the rank is lowered, the issue gets pushed to the future rather that staying where it is.

Why lower the rank of an issue when it enters the board?

Here is the history showing the transition from the backlog ("Received" state) to the board ("Open" state):

made changes - 1 minute ago
StatusOriginal: Open [ 1 ]New: Received [ 10002 ]
made changes - Just now
Rank New: Ranked lower

Hey Martin,

You may refer to the documentation here: Rank a work item

The below point should explain the behaviour you're seeing, and it would hold true for Kanban board as well:

"When you move an work item from the Scrum backlog to a sprint, and it's the first work item added to the sprint, the work item will retain its rank. If other work item have already been added to the sprint, the ranking of the work item will be relative to the ranking of the other work items in the sprint."

Thanks!!
