This question is in reference to Atlassian Developer Documentation: Set up the SDK Prerequisites on a Windows System

Why should we verify that java 1.8 is installed and if not install a java 1.6?

Java 1.7 and Java 1.8 are supported and 1.6 is not.

So, you need install Java 1.7 or 1.8.
