I bought the starter.
I downloaded from the link provided and have Jira Software on Linux installed.
But it has my license key in there, still says expires and 30 days, and if I try to put my license in again to maybe 'update' it, it says this license is not for this product.
What gives? Will it just convert to the starter after the trial? I don't want to get started and then lose access due to a bug or short sighted coder who couldn't be bothered to add a license check when someone bought one until after a trial period is over.
You currently have a trial licence in place.
You say "if I try to put my license in again to maybe 'update' it, it says this license is not for this product."
First, you don't "put your license in again" - that won't update anything.
Second, it sounds like you are pasting a new licence key in, but "not for this product" really does mean what it says, you have used a key that is for another system.
You need to go to your my.atlassian account, and find the licence key for Jira, and paste that into the licence box in your Jira.
The license key IS the right one.
And forgive me for thinking that if I use the right key the first time it would say registered and not trial software. I get that the trial and registered are the same installer, just 1 uses a purchased key the other a temp key.
So how about an answer as to WHY IT SAYS TRIAL.
What part of my question is difficult?
The key it shows is the same damn key in my account. And no, it is not obvious it says wrong product. Because it is the PRODUCT THE RECEIPT LINKED ME TO DOWNLOAD!
I go to my account. it links me to this
I install that. it grabs the key and registers all on it's own, and the key it used is the same one in my account. So I ask again, why does it still say Evaluation?

The system is clearly telling you that it is not the right key.
It says "Trial" because you have put in a trial licence, not the full one. There's nothing difficult about your question, I've given you the answer to it. I think the difficulty is that you're not understanding how the licences work.
When you buy a full licence, you will get a totally different key in a totally different line in your list of "my atlassian" accounts.
Could you try this instead of seeming to jump around with re-installations and new trial licences:
You will note that the licence key from the web-site will be different to the one you have currently, and you need to be 100% sure you select the line with Jira Software on it, not Jira (core) or Jira Service Desk.

OK, so when I first got it I copied the key from my account. it said it was already registered as the trial. Which is why I cam here.
So this time when I clicked on my registration in my account it wanted my server number. I had to do this twice before it actually registered a new license that worked.
This process needs to be easier, like when you install, enter license key or generate trial. I don't remember it giving me that choice, It installed, had me sign in with my account and it automatically generated a key. I thought it registered my key from my account, that would would make the most sense. And in my account was no trial license that I could find, just my start one.
Anyway, it now says commercial.

Hi @Notsotoo,
Welcome to Atlassian Community!
When generating a trial license, you need to watch attention to which product you are generating it for - there is a difference between a license for Jira Core, Jira Software and Jira Service Desk. These licenses are not compatible with each other. What license (for which product) are you trying to insert now?
Cheers, Pavel

Not sure I get what you mean, or you don't understand.
I have a starter license. I am not generating anything.
Per my image above you can clearly see it is JIRA SOFTWARE but says trial will expire and license type says Evaluation not starter. Why is it trial when they key is my starter?
