Zero to hero in Server/Data Center management

Hello everyone.

I've been an Atlassian admin for cloud products for 4 years now.
Jira, JSM, Confluence, Bitbucket, OpsGenie, all in Cloud.

I have 0 IT studies background and I embarked on this experience by chance.

Now I need to switch to Server/Data Center as I'm changing jobs, but I need help.

What should I learn to be able to handle my new tasks properly ?

Thank you.

Hi @Houssein Barkallah

If you are no going to be the Linux/db admin, then the transition isn't so crazy. Sure, you will have to find some features in different places on Server/DC but the core functionality is the same. Some of your admin experience is even going to be better, for example how you can show custom fields by field type in Server/DC and you will now get Priority Schemas :)

Speaking of custom fields, you will have to pay more attention to them and try to keep the number of them down since they very much so affect the performance. Backup will be in your hands (or the Linux/db admin). You might want to practice more in a sandbox when building/testing new apps and schemas. And you the Atlassian Support will not be your default/first to look to. It will be you now, but you can of course still create support tickets.

I encourage you to join the Data Center group and the Enterprise group here in the Community, if you haven't already.

HTH and good luck. You can do this!

Atlassian University has all the courses for their products on DC. That will help!

And, if you will / intend to work longer than 3 years at the new company, I would start learning alllll about Migrations, the Data Centre Roadmap ends after 3 years and Atlassian is pushing harder than ever on Cloud.

My expectation: DC end of life announcement at Team 25, with a 3 year retirement program, and everyone needs to be on Cloud or a totally different ecosystem by February 2028.

Also, many Marketplace apps are Cloud “first”, sometimes even Cloud Only

You will need to be careful in what you need and will install as some apps have less features/functionality, and might not even exist on DC at all.
