We are new to jira , I have a team-managed project with scrum set up. When we click on backlog we can see all the issues grouped by sprints. How can I add or remove columns to the issue lines. For example we added a custom field called legacyNumber.. We want that field to show in the grid view without having to click on the issue then select details .

Hi @Nelson Capote

It's Mary from Planyway for Jira

In Jira, especially within team-managed projects using the Scrum framework, the ability to customize views, including adding or removing columns in the backlog or boards, can vary based on the project type (team-managed vs. company-managed) and the specific view you are working with. For team-managed projects, customization options are often more limited compared to company-managed projects. However, I'll guide you through a general approach to customizing the issue display in your backlog, keeping in mind that some features might be restricted or may not apply directly to your setup.

Adding Custom Fields to the Backlog View in Team-Managed Projects

As of my last update, in team-managed projects, the backlog view does not offer the same level of column customization that you might find in company-managed projects or on boards. Typically, the backlog displays a simplified list of issues, primarily showing the issue key, summary, and other limited details such as status, assignee, and story points.

For custom fields like your legacyNumber, showing them directly in the backlog grid view or on issue lines might not be directly supported through Jira's UI settings for team-managed projects. However, you can utilize the board settings to adjust what information is displayed for issues on your board, which can help in other phases of your workflow outside of the backlog.

Workaround and Alternative Options:

  1. Board Configuration for Custom Fields:

    • Navigate to your Scrum board associated with the team-managed project.
    • Go to the board settings by clicking on the three dots (more options) or the board's name and selecting "Board settings" or a similar option.
    • Look for a section related to card layout or issue detail view. In some instances, you can customize what fields are visible on cards within the board. This might not directly change the backlog view but can help in sprint planning and active sprint views.
  2. Use of Filters and Quick Filters:

    • Although not a direct solution to your request, you can create quick filters that might help you highlight issues with specific legacyNumber values or criteria. This is done in the board settings under "Quick Filters".
    • These filters won't add a column but can help in quickly identifying issues based on your custom field criteria.
  3. Jira Dashboards:

    • Consider using Jira Dashboards to create a more customized view of your issues, including the use of your custom fields. You can use gadgets that display issues in a list with your desired fields visible.

Hello @Nelson Capote

It is not possible to add fields to the cards in a Team Managed project. There is a change request for that to which you can add your vote/comments.

The ability to customize cards is only available in boards created for Company Managed projects and boards created from Saved Filters.
