can I create a "View only" custom field?

I've created a custom field that totals the values from 4 other fields.

Is it possible to configure my custom field in such a way that users cannot enter a value in the field?  I'm not seeing an option to make a field 'view only'.

Has anyone else found a way to accomplish this?

The automation I've created auto-populates this custom field with the aggregated value of the other four fields.

No. If you're calculating the totals behind the scene just put it on the View screen only. 

If you want some users to update a field put the field in a transition and then protect the transition so only those you want to update it can execute it.
