cannot add issues in board view

emily December 7, 2023

Hello,

In our Jira project, there used to be a "+ Create Issue" button below each column when viewing the board view, allowing us to create issues directly.

However, in one project, the "+ Create Issue" button disappeared when starting a new sprint. I'm inquiring about the cause and how to bring back the "Create Issue" button so that we can create issues directly from the board. For your reference, I have attached the relevant images.

Hi @emily -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

What is your type of project: Company-managed or Team-managed?  You may find that information at the lower-left side of the page's expanding area

If you hover your cursor over the column, does the "+ Create issue" appear?

Do you have any swim lanes enabled for your board?  Some of the types of swim lanes (such as JQL queries) are not compatible with showing the add issue feature.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hello, Bill. @Bill Sheboy

Thank you for your response.

Firstly, type of projecy: all the projects in the attached pictures are team-managed projects.

Also, even when I hover over the columns, the "Create Issue" button doesn't appear at all.

Lastly, how can I check if there are any active swim lanes? For your information, I haven't set up any specific configurations such as JQL queries on the board.

I'm eagerly awaiting your response. Thank you!

Thanks for clarifying, Emily.

For team-managed projects, I believe the "+ Create Issue" feature is only available for a Kanban board, and not a Scrum one.  Instead try using the Create button at the top of the page, setting the sprint value during the create.  I hypothesize that design was done so people pause and consider before changing the scope of an active sprint.

Regarding swim lanes, I was describing the company-managed project behavior, which is not relevant as you are using a team-managed one.  For team-managed, there is only a Group By option on the view.

Thank you for your kind response, @Bill Sheboy

I appreciate you letting me know that the "Create Issue" feature is not available on Scrum boards. Thanks to your clarification, my lingering questions have been resolved over the past few days.

In that case, is there a possibility to try changing the board to a Kanban board for this sprint, or are there any alternative methods?  How and where can I set the type of the board?

Thank you for your helpful explanation.

Have a great day!

For a team-managed project, it is very easy to switch between a Scrum and Kanban board...perhaps too easy: the methods a team uses often result from a discussion.

Once you decide you want to switch from Scrum to Kanban, you may:

  • from the left side of the page's options, select Project Settings
  • select Features
  • and then you may de-select Sprints

To switch back, just enable the option.

These methods have some different practices, and so I would recommend not changing the board type just to get the feature of creating the issue on the board during the active sprint.
