cannot "Complete Sprint" even with admin and scrum master role permissions

David Wilder February 4, 2020

I know this has been asked many times on here, but I am unable to tie any solution to what I am seeing specifically.

I have admin and scrum master roles for the project.  I have three active sprints that I do not have permissions to close.  Specifically, I am looking at the Active Sprint tab under a Scrum board.  On the top right corner the "Complete Sprint" option is grayed out.  I have closed out other sprints in this board, but these three are older ones that no one ever closed out.  So, I do not know the history.  There is a tool tip that states: "You need the Manage Sprints permission for all projects in the origin board to manage this sprint."  I imagine that somehow this origin board is no longer around or possibly from a different older project as I know that we migrated someone of these issues from a different project, but I do not know the timeline.

I found some related issues stating that I needed to change my JQL query for the board.  My JQL query is very simple and only includes this project.

How do I close these sprints? Or how do I find out what origin board this is tied to, so I can get permissions to that or ???  Not sure at this point.

This is running Jira v7.13.5.

Since I could not delete those sprints or find out where they came form.  I created a new sprint in my project and moved all the issues to that sprint.  I was then able to close my sprint and the old sprint that was imported just went away because it no longer had any issues from my project.

Just in case anyone else wanders onto this situation, here is how I solved it.

I was in the same situation as David.  I had closed sprints before, but suddenly looked as if I didn't have the Manage Sprints permission for my project.  Had 4 tickets that were part of another project on the board.  Removed them.  Still unable to complete the active sprint.

I had changed the board filter to not specify the project.  There were other criteria that made the project redundant.  I added the project back into the filter (it didn't change the contents of the board) and that worked.  I could manage the sprints on the board again.

how did you changed the board filter to not specify the project?  and how do you add the project back to the filter?

You change the board filter via the "Board Settings" under the "..." menu on the Active Sprint page. It's a JQL query and you must be a board Admin to change it. The original owner of the board must also check the permissions of that Filter to allow others (you specifically) to edit it.

check the filter that defines the board (board settings > general). Determine all projects that are included in the board's filter then check to ensure you have Manage sprints permission for each project.

Thanks for replying.

I have several projects in this install, but only one associated with this board. And I have Admin and Scrum Master permissions for that project.

Filter Query: project = SUST ORDER BY Rank ASC

Also, I have recently closed out sprints on this board.  It is only these three that are causing an issue.

Hi David, on Cloud (my situation) things are a bit different. Have you reviewed this article that speaks to managing sprint permissions in server? - permissions-overview

note this is for 8.0. not sure what version you are on.

Thanks I will review.  This is running Jira v7.13.5.

I think the main issue here is related to this:

  • Additionally, to perform sprint-related actions, users need the 'Manage sprints' permission for all projects in the origin board — the origin board being the board in which the sprint was originally created.

Is there a way to see what the "Origin Board" is for a sprint?  I think If I find that information out, then I can get permissions for that Project and/or have someone with those permission help me out.
