change text field character limit

I would like to create a new custom text field in Jira or edit an existing field where there would be limitations on the number of character users can enter in that field.

Any help would be appreciated!

The short-text and unlimited-text fields are the only two you can do off-the-shelf

What character limit are you looking for (and why? might help us a bit)

We use the jsu plugin to restrict length and format of customfields.
