I'm planning to setup a test environment for JIRA/Confluence/Bamboo/Cruicible applications. I guess I can copy the production instances (e.g. installation DIR, Home DIR and database) to the new servers, change the applications to point to the new database and run the applications.

Just wondering if the new servers should have exactly the same Linux and JDK version as the current production version?

The closer the better otherwise they are not as good a test environments as they could be.

Depending on your load you could also install them on the same server as your production instances but under different database users and account users to limit unintentially screwing the production systems up.

Always strive to limit differences and you will sleep better at night :)

Good idea, thanks. The reason I'm asking is because we're also planning for migration and upgrading the applications. I was thinking - instead of upgrading later (e.g. JDK version), why not do it now when we have to setup system environment from scratch?

Ok, yeah if migrating and upgrading from old version then it makes sense to use newer versions as you are going to test it anyway. Then when you know it works, replicate it to the new production instance and you are back to everything matching
