custom fields from plugin no longer present !

we''re upgrading JIRA 6.4 => 7.0

i rebuilt my plugin for JIRA 7, various API changes only to support the version change, such as ApplicationUser<=>User

after loading rebuilt plugin to JIRA 7, I noticed that all instances of previously created custom fields that came from types defined in the plugin were missing.

you can still create new custom fields using the types defined in the plugin (and they work) but all previously created fields are gone.

other items in the plugin - workflow postfunctions, conditions etc - all seem intact

i am out running out of ideas on this

any thoughts?
