i can open xls and doc files without a problem in IE

bu in mozilla its opens in read only mode.

in page i click on xls or doc and select open with program (MS Word or Excel).

You've posted this in our Events area - is this related to a file you're opening from an Event?

If not, what does this relate to?

I'd hazard a guess this is a Firefox default rather than Atlassian-related, and will be something you need to change in your browser settings.
