Did you mean:

how to create initiative

Rory Scherer June 20, 2025

I have stories/tasks/bugs created within several epics.  I want to create a level higher than an epic; initiative.

How can I do that?

Thanks

Hello @Rory Scherer

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Jira does not support adding additional levels to the issue type hierarchy in the Standard plan, which your post tags indicate you are using.

To have that feature you would have to upgrade to the Premium plan, or consider a third party app to manage additional hierarchy levels.

Thank you

Hello @Alberto Brioschi

What is the Type of the project this concerns?

The first step is to add an Initiative issue type to the Jira instance. That can be done only by a Jira Administrator.

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/add-edit-and-delete-an-issue-type/

The next step is to move the Initiative issue type to the correct level in the Issue Type Hierarchy. This also can be done only by a Jira Administrator.

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/configure-custom-hierarchy-levels-in-advanced-roadmaps/

Issue types above the default Level 1 - Epic can be managed only in Company Managed projects. The new Issue Type will have to be added to the Issue Type Scheme for the relevant Company Managed project. This also can be done only by a Jira Administrator.

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/add-edit-and-delete-an-issue-type-scheme/

The Initiatives can then be created in that project and set as parents of Epics in that and other projects.

  • If you are tracking your Epics and their children in a Team Managed project, creation of the Company Managed project for the Initiatives will have to be done by a Jira Administrator. You can then set those Initiatives as parents of the Epics in the Team Managed project.

You then will have to create a Plan that references the Initiatives and all their children. You can find the documentation for using the Plans feature here:
