anybody know jira's logic for assigning the rank field's initial value when creating a new ticket?  for instance when creating a new epic i hoped it would be ranked at the top or bottom of the epic list, but that does not appear to be the case.  was hoping for any easy way to find newly created epics.

Hi @William Vancrey

My answer to your question is based on using Jira Cloud, not on any documentation.  If someone can find documentation on LexoRank (Jira's ranking algorithm) which explains the behavior, please chime in.

Settings and Context are key when ranking new issues:

  • First, ranking must be enabled for the board by setting the filter to end in ORDER BY Rank ASC.  Sometimes you must explicitly enable Rank to turn this on.
  • Next, where you are and what is selected appear to influence rank:
    • When on the backlog with no issues selected, creating a new issue puts it at the top of the backlog
    • When on the backlog with an issue selected, creating a new issue puts it immediately after the selected issue
    • When on the board or a report, creating a new issue puts it at the bottom of the backlog
  • Adding a new epic appears to always add to the end of the epic list (bottom of the epic panel) when ranking is enabled
  • Lastly, if you have multiple boards for one project and they do not all have rank enabled, the behavior appears to be undefined, and so issues may not consistently appear as noted above.

Best regards,

Bill
