we are tracking Epic as a bigger project and stories as features, since stories is same level as tasks . stories which cannot be closed in 1 sprint , but wants to show the amount of work done in that sprint . is there any way to do it other than breaking the stories into smaller ones ? i think sub-tasks will take same sprint as its parent, right ?

The usual response to this is yes, break your stories up (or, in some cases, make your sprints longer).

You are right, sub-tasks belong to a parent and hence are part of the story, so always in the same sprint.
