The installation docs are for anyone wanting to install the software, they can't be more simple, because they have to cover a lot of situations.

You need to follow those guides to get it installed, but they do have to try to cover a lot of variations, so they have a lot more information than most of us really need.

However, if you really need a hard no-fuss instruction:

  • Install a supported operating system
  • Install the software to handle tar.gz files (if the OS does not do it for you)
  • Download the tar.gz
  • Uncompress it into the install directory you want
  • Create a home directory (to hold a load of working info, as well as attachments and plugins)
  • Edit the properties file to point to "home"
  • Run the start-jira.sh/bat
  • Go to the Jira UI and set the rest of it up
  • Get your network DNS to point your desired URL to the server you installed Jira on
  • Change Jira's base-url to match

Hi Nic,

Thank you. I was able to change the port using the server.xml file.

Hi Nic,

I am trying to configure Jira as reverse proxy. I am following the below link for it.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver071/configuring-apache-reverse-proxy-using-the-ajp-protocol-802593042.html

should I install httpd in Linux machine for reverse-proxy or jira tar file has httpd in it.

You can install httpd where-ever you want, as long as it's available to your users on the urls you want to use.  Jira does not have a proxy built in, as not everyone needs it
