number sequencing

Is there a way (or add on for cloud) that would create a number in a custom field that would increment by X for every new issue created in the project (so if the first issue created is issue #1, the next issue created in that project would be issue #2 automatically)?

If I may ask what is the reasoning behind this behaviour? The issuekey is already doing this kind of behavior e.g XXXX-1234.
