set readonly property to a field?

I need to set a field readonly.

The field type is the following one: single-line text.

The field must be set only in creation mode.

In view/edit screen the field must be visible but readonly.

Is there a way?

In Cloud the screens View and Edit are the same.

There is no read only property for a field.

To do "create, but then never edit", just remove the field from the "edit" screen.  People will no longer be able to edit it with the in-line edit and as it will not appear on the edit screen, it can't be changed there either.

For Next-gen projects, you can't do this though, there are no screens behind them.  If you offer a field for edit at any point, you can edit it.
