Not much to it: I started creating an issue and got a long ways into the description when my browser window closed (probably fat finger error on my part). Is it gone, or can I recover a draft as in Gmail? [Yes, I looked around the UI, but didn't find anything.]

Unfortunately, no.. Jira doesn't have a draft feature like Confluence or Gmail. I'm afraid your description is gone. (happens to me to often too)
