Sorry to hear about this problem. It might help to recreate this error by attempting the update once more. If this still errors out, then try looking into the $JIRAHOME/log/atlassian-jira.log file for the date/time when this happened.
That log file should be able to give us more details about what is happening to cause this error. Alternatively, you might try these steps as well.
Following these steps is effectively a way to reset your Jira to use the UPM version that shipped with that specific version of Jira. When Jira starts up, it will default to perhaps a previous version of the UPM. I have seen this technique sometimes help resolve such problems with trying to update the UPM. But of course if you can't stop Jira right now, or you don't want to try that method, or you tried and it didn't help, let's take a closer look at the logs to see what we can find out more about this problem.
